{"id":41194,"date":"2023-11-27T22:12:53","date_gmt":"2023-11-28T06:12:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sweet-pascal.52-27-215-206.plesk.page\/three-silicon-valley-candidates-compete-for-state-seat\/"},"modified":"2023-11-27T22:12:53","modified_gmt":"2023-11-28T06:12:53","slug":"three-silicon-valley-candidates-compete-for-state-seat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vietvalley.com\/en\/three-silicon-valley-candidates-compete-for-state-seat\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Silicon Valley candidates compete for state seat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A myriad of\u00a0South Bay seats are set to open up with Congresswoman Anna Eshoo\u2019s retirement\u2014and one of the most contested may be the race for Assembly District 26.<\/p>\n<p>Three politicos have already hopped into the race for Assemblymember Evan Low\u2019s seat, with\u00a0the incumbent <a href=\"https:\/\/sanjosespotlight.com\/silicon-valley-congresswoman-anna-eshoo-plans-to-retire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eying Eshoo\u2019s congressional seat<\/a>. Low could not yet confirm he\u2019s running, but said he\u2019s exploring the possibility. The way the race for his seat is shaping up\u2014along with sources close to Low confirming his intention to run\u2014indicates he will likely be a congressional candidate soon. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanjosespotlight.com\/silicon-valley-california-lawmakers-to-run-for-reelection-in-redrawn-districts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">District 26<\/a> covers Sunnyvale, Cupertino, Santa Clara and a small part of San Jose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve received an outpouring of calls and texts from across the district urging me to run,\u201d Low told San Jos\u00e9 Spotlight. \u201cShould I decide to run, it\u2019s clear that we will do so with the diverse coalition of supporters and the financial resources necessary to win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Ahrens, Low\u2019s right hand man, has filed to run for his boss\u2019 seat. Santa Clara County Board of Education Trustee <a href=\"https:\/\/sanjosespotlight.com\/silicon-valley-makes-history-with-trio-of-south-asian-trustees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tara Sreekrishnan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sanjosespotlight.com\/a-double-life-for-some-silicon-valley-santa-clara-county-san-jose-politicos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sunnyvale Vice Mayor Omar Din<\/a> are also entering the race.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Ahrens is the president of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District Board of Trustees and has filed to run for Assembly District 26. He\u2019s also a member of\u00a0the Foothill-De Anza Community College District Board of Trustees, serving as president in the past two of his six years in office. He filed his candidacy papers on Tuesday\u00a0before Thanksgiving. His endorsements include Pearl Cheng, a fellow district trustee, county Supervisors Cindy Chavez and Susan Ellenberg, Cupertino Mayor Hung Wei and Assemblymember Gail Pellerin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(I) have been engaging with friends and supporters in the district since then (and) have received endorsements from leaders across our community who I work with every day,\u201d Ahrens told San Jos\u00e9 Spotlight. \u201cI\u2019m excited to be making a formal campaign announcement very soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sreekrishnan, 30, sports leadership roles similar to Ahrens. She has served on the county board of education since 2021. She could be considered state Sen. Dave Cortese\u2019s right hand woman, as she currently serves as his deputy chief of staff and legislative director. Photo courtesy of candidate.<\/p>\n<p>Sreekrishnan is also the co-founder of Silicon Valley Youth Climate Action\u2014a nonprofit that seeks to combat climate change through education and public policy initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live in a beautiful region, filled with great promise and great challenges. A lack of affordable housing, growing homelessness, access to quality education, traffic congestion, climate change and public safety are all critical issues that must be addressed if we are to preserve our quality of life,\u201d Sreekrishnan said in a statement. \u201cI am committed to ensuring that every child has access to quality education, every family feels secure and safe in their homes, and every voice is heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sreekrishnan is endorsed by Cortese, state Sen. Nancy Skinner, Sunnyvale Councilmember Linda Sell and Vickie Fairchild, a Santa Clara Unified School District trustee, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Din, 26, comes into the race with a different background. He is the youngest and first south Asian and Muslim elected to the Sunnyvale City Council. He won the seat in 2020 and became vice mayor this year. Photo by Jana Kadah.<\/p>\n<p>Din said he wants to build on the work he started in Sunnyvale and points to his leadership in creating a bus route to get North Sunnyvale students to high school in the south part of the city, as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/sanjosespotlight.com\/sunnyvale-wants-give-monthly-checks-to-residents-in-need\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guaranteed basic income<\/a> pilot program that will deliver checks of $1,000 to low-income families. He also helped deliver <a href=\"https:\/\/sanjosespotlight.com\/san-jose-short-term-housing-development-could-fall-through\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">200 transitional homes<\/a> for homeless residents in North San Jose. He did not share any endorsements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven my strong track record of delivering results and standing by my values, I will be a champion for our community in the capital,\u201d Din told San Jos\u00e9 Spotlight. \u201cI will fight for working families, for our Asian, Hispanic and minority communities and for a reduction in unsheltered homelessness.
