Billionaire, Jeff Bezos, has once again proven his super-villain credentials by building a $42m clock to outlast human civilization.<\/p>\n

Said to be able to run for 10 millennia, it\u2019s powered by\u00a0Earth\u2019s\u00a0thermal cycles.<\/p>\n

Jeff Bezos is one of the richest people on the planet.<\/p>\n

Forbes<\/a> estimates he has $169.1 <\/em>billion in the bank. <\/p>\n

Cash means nothing to the Amazon founder who can afford a $79 million home on \u2018Billionaire Bunker\u2019<\/a>, $75m \u2018support yacht\u2019 for his $500m \u2018mega yacht\u2019 <\/a> and $78 million private jet<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now it seems time and space<\/a> are meaningless too.<\/p>\n

Bezos announced the project back in 2018.<\/p>\n

He invested in the idea of putting a giant, 10,000-year clock inside a mountain in West Texas.<\/p>\n

Construction on the clock, part of The Long Now Foundation<\/a>, is now well under way.<\/p>\n

Once finished, it will stand at 500 feet (152 meters) high.<\/p>\n

As per a statement on the clock\u2019s official website:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Clock is hundreds of feet tall, engineered to require minimal maintenance, and powered by mechanical energy harvested from sunlight as well as the people that visit it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Clock will mark time with astronomic and calendric displays and a chime generator designed with the help of Brian Eno that can produce over 3.5 million unique bell chime sequences \u2014 one for every day the Clock is visited for the next 10,000 years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bezos is footing the bill but the idea came from a man named Danny Hillis who co-founded the foundation. <\/p>\n

The idea is supposed to help people invest in thee long-term future of humanity \u2013 and\u00a0the planet.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hoped to encourage people to \u201cconjure with notions of generations and millennia\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you have a Clock ticking for 10,000 years what kinds of generational-scale questions and projects will it suggest?\u201d the website asks.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf a Clock can keep going for ten millennia, shouldn\u2019t we make sure our civilization does as well?\u201d<\/p>\n

That idea has been labelled \u2018The Clock of the Long Now\u2019.<\/p>\n

Hillis build an actual, working smaller version of the proposed clock.<\/p>\n

And, while Bezos is building the full-size timepiece, Hillis is still very much involved in its design.<\/p>\n

When completed, it will only tick once a year and its chime will only be heard once per millennium.<\/p>\n

Now if that doesn\u2019t make you feel insignificant I don\u2019t know what will.<\/p>\n
