A UK government-backed company is working on a revolutionary aircraft that can travel halfway around the world without having to refuel.<\/p>\n
And it\u2019s capable of doing that thanks to one clever solution.<\/p>\n
READ MORE:<\/strong> \u2018New Concorde\u2019 supersonic jet that flies from New York to London in record time set to make first flight<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n The Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI<\/a>) is working on a new aircraft called FlyZero.<\/p>\n The FlyZero is powered by liquid hydrogen, which is why the range is so massive.<\/p>\n The hydrogen-powered<\/a> jet is fitted with tanks designed to store liquid hydrogen at minutes 250\u00b0 Celsius (418\u00b0 Fahrenheit).<\/p>\n It has four tanks in total, two at the back \u2013 the biggest ones \u2013 and two smaller ones at the front.<\/p>\n In car terms, this is a bit like having a rear-biased all-wheel drive car.<\/p>\n <\/a>Aerospace Technology Institute ATI<\/p>\n The FlyZero is relatively large.<\/p>\n It has a wingspan of 54 meters, nearly twice the size of a Boeing 737<\/a>, and 279 seats.<\/p>\n It\u2019s an ambitious project, and an expensive one at that.<\/p>\n But, at the moment, it is also slightly underfunded.<\/p>\n The ATI has received roughly $2.6 billion in funding in total, but the Institute has allocated a relatively small portion of that to the FlyZero program.<\/p>\n So far, they\u2019ve only spent around $20 million, which is more or less peanuts when we\u2019re talking about aircraft.<\/p>\n <\/a>Aerospace Technology Institute ATI<\/p>\n There\u2019s no deadline yet, but the goal is have this hydrogen-powered jet ready by the next decade.<\/p>\n This is because that\u2019s when major aerospace companies are planning to launch their own hydrogen-powered aircraft.<\/p>\n Airbus should lead the pack, with a hydrogen-powered airliner scheduled to debut in 2035.<\/p>\n The post Liquid-hydrogen-powered plane would fly from the UK to the US without refueling<\/a> appeared first on Supercar Blondie<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" A UK government-backed company is working on a revolutionary aircraft that can travel halfway around the world without having to refuel.
