American company, Astrobotic, will be the first private company to successfully touch down on the lunar surface.<\/p>\n

NASA\u2019s wacky-looking Super Guppy could be the reason humans are able to get back on the moon<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n CEO, John Thornton, explained that the aim is to carry NASA<\/a> instruments to study the lunar environment.<\/p>\n This is in anticipation of NASA\u2019s manned missions, named Artemis.<\/p>\n However, despite a lot of people being desperate to get to the moon<\/a> \u2013 there\u2019s a twist.<\/p>\n This time unlike the last, the lander named Peregrine will have nobody aboard. <\/p>\n A program called CLPS, started several years ago, seeing NASA commissioning US companies.<\/p>\n <\/a>Astrobiotic<\/p>\n These organisations would be tasked with sending technologies to the lunar surface to conduct scientific experiments.<\/p>\n It\u2019s hoped that these fixed-price contracts could enable a lunar economy via a new lower-cost transport service.<\/p>\n From there, it\u2019s hoped NASA can establish a base on the moon.<\/p>\n <\/a>NASA<\/p>\n Thornton made a statement on the mission at a press briefing in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, 29 November.<\/p>\n \u201cOne of the big challenges of what we\u2019re attempting here is attempting a launch and landing on the surface Moon for a fraction of what it would otherwise cost,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cOnly about half of the missions that have gone to the surface of the Moon have been successful.<\/p>\n \u201cSo it\u2019s certainly a daunting challenge. I\u2019m going to be terrified and thrilled all at once at every stage of this.\u201d<\/p>\n The rocket from the ULA industrial group has been named Vulcan Centaur.<\/p>\n <\/a>ULA<\/p>\n Vulcan Centaur\u2019s inaugural flight is scheduled to take off on 24 December from Florida.<\/p>\n We will have to wait with baited breath for \u201ca few days\u201d for the probe to get into lunar orbit.<\/p>\n However, the landing attempt will be further down the line still. <\/p>\n Thornton explained that this is to ensure light conditions at the target location are right. <\/p>\n The probe\u2019s descent will happen without human intervention, but will be monitored.<\/p>\n <\/a>Astrobiotic<\/p>\n Japanese and Israeli private companies have both made unsuccessful attempts to land on the moon over the past few years. <\/p>\n Only the US, Russia, China and India<\/a> have ever been successful. <\/p>\n In fact, India shared footage of their lunar rover \u2018playfully frolicking\u2019<\/a> on the moon\u2019s south pole recently.<\/p>\n Other companies that have signed NASA contracts include Firefly Aerospace, Draper and Intuitive Machines.<\/p>\n <\/a>Astrobiotic<\/a>NASA<\/p>\n The latter is due to take off aboard a SpaceX<\/a> rocket in January following a recent unsuccessful launch<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cNASA leadership is aware of the risks and has accepted that some of these missions might not succeed,\u201d said Chris Culbert, CLPS program manager.<\/p>\n \u201cBut even if every landing isn\u2019t successful, CLPS already had an impact on the commercial infrastructure needed to establish a lunar economy.\u201d <\/p>\n The post US to return to the moon for first time in 50 years but this time there\u2019s a big difference<\/a> appeared first on Supercar Blondie<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" 50 years after the last Apollo mission, the US will return to the moon on 25 January 2024.
