{"id":42594,"date":"2023-12-12T14:14:06","date_gmt":"2023-12-12T22:14:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sweet-pascal.52-27-215-206.plesk.page\/xi-jinping-meets-with-vietnams-leaders-during-official-visit-to-hanoi\/"},"modified":"2023-12-12T14:14:06","modified_gmt":"2023-12-12T22:14:06","slug":"xi-jinping-meets-with-vietnams-leaders-during-official-visit-to-hanoi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vietvalley.com\/en\/xi-jinping-meets-with-vietnams-leaders-during-official-visit-to-hanoi\/","title":{"rendered":"Xi Jinping meets with Vietnam\u2019s leaders during official visit to Hanoi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Hanoi on Tuesday with a promise to prioritize relations and improve trade ties with Vietnam amid recent differences over territorial claims in the South China Sea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Vietnam has been working to balance geopolitical rivalries with a desire to advance its economy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Xi\u2019s two-day official visit comes three months after U.S. President Joe Biden visited Hanoi and several weeks after Japan\u2019s prime minister met with top officials in Vietnam\u2019s capital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Xi was met by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at Hanoi\u2019s airport at the start of his first trip to Vietnam in six years. (Nhac Nguyen\/Pool\/AFP)<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cA close neighbor is better than a distant relative,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/english.news.cn\/20231212\/a1069bff7e754765b8e2da34ec0e2081\/c.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Xi wrote on Tuesday in a signed article<\/span><\/a><span> printed in Vietnam\u2019s official Nhan Dan Newspaper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHegemonism, unilateralism and protectionism are on the rise,\u201d he wrote. \u201cPeace and development in the region are confronted with fairly grave challenges of instability and uncertainty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The neighboring countries announced 37 deals on Tuesday, including agreements on railways and telecommunications, according to Reuters. China is Vietnam\u2019s largest trade partner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2018China\u2019s orbit\u2019<\/p>\n<p><span>Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi laid the groundwork for Xi\u2019s visit with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/vietnam\/wang-yi-vietnam-11302023233152.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>a trip to Hanoi on Nov. 30<\/span><\/a><span> to discuss trade and investment cooperation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Two days before Wang\u2019s visit, Vietnam and Japan agreed to cooperate more closely on security issues and work together on defense equipment and technology transfers as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/vietnam\/vietnam-japan-upgrade-11282023000523.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced<\/span><\/a><span> that the two countries were officially upgrading relations to a \u201ccomprehensive strategic partnership.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In September, Biden also announced that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/vietnam\/biden-vietnam-09102023234054.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>United States was upgrading its relationship<\/span><\/a><span> with Vietnam.
