It\u2019s 4 x 5 inches, it\u2019s a tintype, and it\u2019s a country scene,\u201d Guijarro told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/photography\/article\/151015-billy-the-kid-photo-outlaw-photography-history\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"National Geographic\" rel=\"noopener\">National Geographic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But, upon closer inspection, Guijarro realized one of the photos was of infamous outlaw, Billy the Kid, along with four of his gang members, and his girlfriend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not till [I] put it under a magnifying glass [that I thought], \u2018Oh my, what have we got going on here?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/supercarblondie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/man-who-bought-2-dollar-old-photo-discovers-its-true-value-3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>The Fresno Bee<\/p>\n<p>Guijarro and his wife Linda spent several years researching and trying to find evidence to prove the photo\u2019s authenticity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took us a year [of] initial research, reading up and getting up to speed. Linda and I became authenticators and historians by default,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe spent the next four years solid going at this, traveling throughout the Southwest, calling people, going to Western shows, talking to experts. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people dismissed it out of hand because it\u2019s too unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/supercarblondie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/man-who-bought-2-dollar-old-photo-discovers-its-true-value-4.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>InfoForum<\/p>\n<p>However, the couple\u2019s hard work paid off when auction house, Kagin\u2019s, was able to authenticate the piece.<\/p>\n<p>In a rare turn of events, the couple somehow had managed to get hold of one of only two known photos of the gunfighter.<\/p>\n<p>The auction house insured the rare photo for $5 million.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/supercarblondie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/man-who-bought-2-dollar-old-photo-discovers-its-true-value-5.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>Sante Fe Private Tours<\/p>\n<p>However, there are some experts who aren\u2019t convinced the photo is really of Billy the Kid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a few of these so-called experts, and I\u2019ve actually talked to them. I said, you\u2019ve asked me to do these things, [I] went out and did them,\u201d Guijarro said<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI lay out physical proof, I get nothing back. So, I don\u2019t even like to give credence to their names anymore.
