This <a href=\"https:\/\/supercarblondie.com\/ancient-chinese-city-perfectly-preserved-at-bottom-of-lake\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Ancient Chinese city<\/a> was found perfectly preserved at the bottom of a lake.<\/p>\n<p>Back to this summer and Henley had asked her dad to go swimming and play with rocks and sea glass off the southeast shore of Lake Michigan\u2019s Green Island.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, her father, Tim, had plans to use their day on the water to get some fishing done.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/supercarblondie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/FrRh2fTC2iCxSZPrczHjMwUAL7d5b9qpXV6Srx9A-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>Facebook\/Tim Wollack<\/p>\n<p>The duo met in the middle, agreeing to go to Henley\u2019s favorite spot and go \u2018real slow\u2019 along the route to look for fish.<\/p>\n<p>As they entered shallow waters that are barely ten feet deep, Tim realised it was an area where hundreds of vessels had been lost over the years.<\/p>\n<p>So a strange shape on the sonar didn\u2019t immediately pique his interest.<\/p>\n<p>Tim\u2019s boat is equipped with FishFinder.<\/p>\n<p>The sonar device sends waves to the bottom of the sea and converts reflected waves into imagery.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/supercarblondie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/pOGEifoFIUvF5SoAnL4pMHMYjEaGIRpR0OKKwxgn.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>Facebook\/Wisconsin Historical Society <\/p>\n<p>On seeing the screen, Tim immediately realised this was a unique find.<\/p>\n<p>Henley, meanwhile, thought she\u2019d spotted an octopus.<\/p>\n<p>Turning back in an attempt to see it again, Tim realized he could see the hull of a shipwreck.<\/p>\n<p>He took some pictures of the shipwreck to share with his friends.<\/p>\n<p>He later posted them to the Forgotten Wisconsin page on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/supercarblondie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/FhlhwNwZb2OGDWv8jC4iuEyRuv10RpZDFCqJ2S73.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>Wisconsin Historical Society <\/p>\n<p>He believed it could be the wreckage of a ship called Erie L. Hackley \u2013 however within an hour he discovered he was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/wisconsinhistoricalsociety\/posts\/752432256930629?ref=embed_post\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Wisconsin Historical Society<\/a>\u00a0reached out to Tim and confirmed that the Erie L. Hackley was actually sunk elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>However, earlier this month, a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) was deployed to investigate.<\/p>\n<p>And what it imaged hadn\u2019t been seen by human eyes for over one and a half centuries. <\/p>\n<p>It was the wreckage of a three-masted sailing ship. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/supercarblondie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/noaa-e0eHtnr7eeU-unsplash-scaled.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>Unsplash<\/p>\n<p>While it wasn\u2019t as useful as this abandoned shipwreck, which was converted into a <a href=\"https:\/\/supercarblondie.com\/friends-convert-shipwreck-into-cozy-lounge\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">middle-of-the-ocean gaming lounge<\/a> \u2013 it did have historical significance.<\/p>\n<p>Taking the data and location into consideration, researchers believe it belongs to a ship called George L. Newman.<\/p>\n<p>The historic shipwreck, measuring 122 feet (37 m) long and 26.3 feet (eight meters) wide, was built in 1855 by Benjamin Flint.<\/p>\n<p>On the night of 8 October, 1871, the ship was sailing through the area hauling lumber.<\/p>\n<p>As fate would have it, that was the same evening as the Peshtigo Fire \u2013 the\u00a0deadliest fire\u00a0in the history of the US.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/supercarblondie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/The_Peshtigo_Fire_showing_people_seeking_refuge_in_the_Peshtigo_River.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>Wikimedia Commons\/Peshtigo Fire museum<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s thought brush fire started by railroad workers in the area grew into an inferno that scorched 1.5 million acres of land and claimed 1,200 lives.<\/p>\n<p>The thick smoke from the fire forced the lighthouse keeper to keep the lights on even during the day.<\/p>\n<p>However, after becoming enveloped in thick smoke, the George L.
