According to the recent Freedom House report, there has been a significant increase in transnational repression targeting exiled journalists and human rights activists worldwide. Similarly, the case of Y Quynh Bdap, a Montagnard human rights activist, highlights another alarming instance of transnational repression. Despite being recognized as a refugee, he faces the threat of extradition from Thailand to Vietnam, where he could face torture, inhumane treatment, or even death. Such actions directly contradict Thailand\u2019s obligations as a newly elected member of the United Nations Human Rights Council.<\/p>\n

2. Online Repression Against U.S. Citizens<\/p>\n

It is not only exiled activists who are targeted; even U.S. citizens are being subjected to online repression by the Vietnamese government. Social media platforms like Facebook have been pressured by the Vietnamese authorities to remove posts and delete accounts of American citizens who dare to speak out against human rights abuses in Vietnam. This is a blatant violation of freedom of speech, a right protected under the U.S. Constitution, and must not be tolerated.<\/p>\n

3. The Role of Social Media Platforms<\/p>\n

Social media platforms have become a battleground where authoritarian regimes seek to manipulate narratives and suppress dissenting voices. We call upon these platforms to uphold their responsibility in protecting the freedom of speech of their users, particularly when those users are exercising their right to criticize human rights violations committed by foreign governments. We urge Congress to work closely with these platforms to ensure that they do not become tools for authoritarian oppression.<\/p>\n
