{"id":47669,"date":"2024-03-03T18:13:57","date_gmt":"2024-03-04T02:13:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sweet-pascal.52-27-215-206.plesk.page\/another-arrest-as-vietnams-internet-crackdown-continues\/"},"modified":"2024-03-03T18:13:57","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T02:13:57","slug":"another-arrest-as-vietnams-internet-crackdown-continues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vietvalley.com\/another-arrest-as-vietnams-internet-crackdown-continues\/","title":{"rendered":"Another arrest as Vietnam\u2019s internet crackdown continues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>Vietnam continues to use a controversial section of the law to prosecute people for expressing their opinions, with the arrest of 41-year-old Facebooker Hoang Viet Khanh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Lam Dong Provincial Police announced his detention for \u201canti-state acts\u201d on Friday, Vietnamese media reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>They said Khanh posted and shared articles, video clips and images on social media that \u201csmear the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and insult Ho Chi Minh\u201d the party founder and former president of North Vietnam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The police said its Cyber \u200b\u200bSecurity and Crime Prevention Department monitored Khanh\u2019s social media accounts and passed the information on to the Security Investigation Agency of Lam Dong provincial police.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The agency decided to prosecute Khanh for \u201cmaking, storing, distributing or propagating information and documents aimed against the state\u201d under the controversial Article 117 of Vietnam\u2019s criminal law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Vietnam has arrested four people under Article 117 this year alone, according to Radio Free Asia\u2019s records. Popular YouTuber <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/vietnam\/youtube-arrested-02292024161222.html\"><span>Nguyen Chi Tuyen<\/span><\/a><span> was detained on Thursday for anti-state propaganda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>International human rights groups, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/protectdefenders.eu\/vietnam-arbitrary-detention-and-ill-treatment-of-land-rights-defenders\/\"><span>Protect Defenders<\/span><\/a><span>, have accused Vietnam of misusing Article 117 to stifle freedom of expression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Vietnam is currently seeking reelection to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2026-2028 term. Groups including Human Rights Watch and CIVICUS have spoken out against the bid, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/vietnam\/vietnam-human-rights-council-02272024233449.html\">telling RFA<\/a><\/span><span>\u00a0that Hanoi continues to deny its citizens the basic freedoms of speech, assembly and association.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Translated by RFA Vietnamese.
