Vietnam\u2019s parliament will hold an extraordinary session on Thursday to discuss \u2018personnel issues,\u2019 according to a letter sent to legislators and seen by Reuters.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

The news agency quoted Vietnamese officials and diplomats as saying the resignation of President Vo Van Thuong may be on the agenda.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Radio Free Asia\u2019s\u00a0 call to Vietnam\u2019s foreign affairs ministry to confirm details of the meeting went unanswered.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

The session comes after Vietnam canceled a state visit by the Dutch King and Queen planned for March 19-22, due to unspecified \u201cinternal circumstances,\u201d according to a <\/span>statement<\/span><\/a> from the Dutch Royal House.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

President Thuong has only been in the job for a year. He was appointed in <\/span>March, 2023<\/span><\/a>, after a special meeting of the National Assembly two months earlier saw the sudden resignation of then president <\/span>Nguyen Xuan Phuc<\/span><\/a> who took responsibility for a series of major COVID scandals.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

The Vietnamese presidency is largely a ceremonial role.<\/span><\/p>\n\n
