On May 28, the New Glenn rocket exploded shortly after launch at Cape Canaveral Space Force Base in Florida, creating a massive fireball and destroying the launch pad. The explosion was visible from Fort Pierce, 185 km away, and caused shaking in nearby homes. Authorities warned residents to avoid debris and report any findings, but no injuries or fatalities were reported.

Rocket Development

Blue Origin has invested billions and spent nearly a decade developing New Glenn, one of the largest rockets designed for orbital flight. Standing 98 meters tall, it features two stages and is equipped with seven BE-4 engines that use liquid oxygen and liquefied natural gas. The first stage is reusable and is expected to fly at least 25 times.

Future Plans

The first launch of New Glenn is scheduled for January 2025, with additional flights planned for November 2025 and April 2026. However, the April flight encountered issues with placing a satellite in the correct orbit. Limp indicated that adjustments to the valve are being made, and upgraded hardware is expected by the end of the month.

Impact on Artemis Program

The recent explosion may affect NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to establish a long-term human presence on the Moon. Blue Origin initially planned to launch a lunar lander prototype this fall and another lander for Earth orbit next year. The Artemis IV mission, which aims to land astronauts on the Moon, is tentatively scheduled for 2028, depending on the readiness of either Blue Origin’s or SpaceX’s lander. John Logsdon, a space policy expert, noted that this incident poses significant challenges to the already ambitious timeline of the Artemis program.
